Carmen Souza has become a reference in Cape Verde music, establishing her mark on the global music scene. In 2005, with her first album, Ess e Nha Cabo Verde, made with Théo Pascal, her bassist and producer, she creates a new genre, unclassifiable, between traditional African rhythms, Capverdian melodies and contemporary jazz. Often called the Ella Fitzgerald of Cape Verde, Carmen Souza is a pioneer in writing, recording and performing her own formulation of a world jazz. Her charisma and vocal technique allowed her to operate well beyond the limits of world music, jazz – genres in which she evolves with ease and grace – and to make her much more than a singer-songwriter.
